Hallelujah! Gospel Festival promises resounding joy

Chicago Sun-Times June 1, 2007

Chicago’s outdoor festival season has begun. Can we get an amen?
That’s how it starts once again this year, with the Chicago Gospel Festival starting the summer with a righteous shout. This year’s city-sponsored praise fest — Friday through Sunday in Millennium Park, and absolutely free — features more award-winning artists, including Donald Lawrence & Company, Keith “Wonderboy” Johnson, and Myron Butler and Levi.

So praise the lord and pass the funnel cakes. Here’s a look at the event’s schedule on two stages — the main stage in Millennium Park and the Walgreens Day Stage, which on Saturday and Sunday operates under the theme “A Salute to the U.S. Armed Forces.”

SATURDAY
MILLENNIUM PARK STAGE
5 p.m. — Otis Clay.
Is he soul? Is he blues? Is he gospel? Yes, and he moved to Chicago from Mississippi as a boy and has become an iconic figure in all those genres.
